Breakers Boutique Accommodation
south of Punakaiki, West Coast
Beachfront Bed & Breakfast
At Breakers you'll enjoy true West Coast hospitality with your New Zealand born hosts Jan and Stephen with the family dog Ansel not far away.
With 84% of the West Coast being classed as conservation land, there are numerous tracks and trails to explore. Whether you have 1/2 an hour or 3 days there are some great walking and hiking options in the Grey District. Breakers is a great base for many mountain bike trails in the area., including the Old Ghost Road and the Heaphy Track. Steeped in gold-mining history, your hosts can direct you to many fascinating areas to explore. Kayaking, surfing and fishing can also be arranged.
Breakers is set in a sensitive environment with its beachfront location and Paparoa mountain range behind. There is a section of native bush at the entrance to the property that has Maori significance - a Wahi Tapu meaning sacred place or sacred site and as such a covenant has been put on the Certificate of Title for the land ensuring this piece of bush is never removed for development. For Jan and Stephen, this is exciting as Jan has Maori heritage through the Ngai Tahu iwi with descendants who were Ngai Tahu Elders back in the mid-1800s. Ngai Tahu is the main iwi of the South Island and the fact this property she fell in love with back in 2004 has Maori connections gives her all the more reason for believing things were "meant to be" Jan is still researching the exact Wahi Tapu for the property.
Stephen is a professional photographer and offers private tuition and location tours.

Directions
From Greymouth (the south)
Coming from the glacier region or Christchurch, you need to drive straight through Greymouth, staying on SH6. Cross over the Grey River bridge and turn right heading towards Punakaiki and Westport. You will pass through two small villages - Runanga and then Rapahoe. At Rapahoe you hit the Coastal section of the drive - follow for approximately 4kms. Head up the hill with Strongman Mine Memorial lookout at the top. Start your descent, SLOW DOWN, cross over Nine Mile creek bridge and Breakers is directly on the left after crossing the little bridge (make sure you indicate that you are turning!).
From the North
Coming from the Abel Tasman and Marlborough regions, you come through the Upper Buller Gorge to the Inanguha Junction. At the Junction turn left to make sure you stay on State Highway 6 towards Westport and Punakaiki. This is the coastal drive and more scenic route. Breakers is 30kms south of Punakaiki and the Pancake Rocks. After Barrytown, you will start to cross some creeks Fourteen mile creek, Thirteen mile creek then Ten mile creek (one lane bridge on sharp 45 degree bend) – one mile to go. Breakers is on your right just before crossing the little Nine mile creek bridge. If you go over Nine mile creek bridge, you have gone too far. Just before Breakers, on your left-hand side is a sign for Strongman Mine Memorial, this is your landmark to let you know we are just along the road (make sure you indicate that you are turning!).
